Flooring Update

We’ve made big progress on flooring projects both in the living room and the three bedrooms. We had initially started working on the living room floor in May to prepare it for a new finish. All the sanding was complete and we were ready to lay down the new finish – not only did we need the weather to warm up and dry out a bit, Chris was doing all the research to ensure it was coated properly after all that hard work. Over the course of about a week, 3 coats of poly were applied and the results are just amazing. The floors are pine and have been well worn over time. There is such a variety of character and the poly adds such a richness to it.

While we were waiting for the final coat to be cured enough to walk on, the bedroom carpets were being installed! I sort of forgot the color we chose and it always looks different when its a huge piece compared to the small swatch available to preview. The color ended up a bit cooler than I anticipated but it looks like a nice medium neutral color and is so soft and comfortable. It was installed on a day that was incredibly hot and humid but come winter time, it will be much better than a cold hard floor.

With the completed living room floor, we can move back in – the couches, TV and coffee table. This also made room for our new to us dining table – a custom made maple dining table that can seat 10 people. We are the third owner of this table and it has now found a mostly forever home here where many people will make memories around it.

So what is next? In the living room, we need an electrician to help move some outlets and install a ceiling fan, we also hope to have wall sconces on either side of the windows that are across from the french doors. Then it will be cleaning up the walls, priming, and painting, and painting all the window trim and sashes. For the bedrooms, I’ll be painting the window sashes and trim – followed by the doors, door trim and so on. We removed the base trim in preparation for the carpets to go down and eventually we’ll get new trim which will also need to be painted before getting installed. Just so many little (and big) things left to do. For now, we are prioritizing anything that we need warm weather to complete.
